Very happy to announce my upcoming book, “Heart Shock: An Approach to Diagnosing and Treating Trauma with Shen-Hammer and Classical Chinese Medicine” to be published by Singing Dragon publications. “Heart Shock” will present in detail the myriad components of trauma, establish primary, secondary and tertiary treatment strategies and merge the Shen-Hammer and Classical understanding of this important topic. Diagnosis via a comprehensive presentation of each of the channel systems (sinew, luo, primary, divergent, eight extras) will be provided, as will additional concepts such as gu and gui, Dr. Shen’s nervous system, pulse instruction for all the channel systems, etc. all with extensive treatment options with acupuncture, herbal medicine and essential oil therapies. Thanks to Claire Lindsey Wilson and Singing Dragon for their enthusiasm with this project. Stay tuned, anticipated publication end of this year, early next….
Excited and honored to have been invited to speak and present on the Shen-Hammer pulse system at BUCM’s (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine) Characteristic Therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine conference and to represent the Menghe-Ding lineage with Dr. Ding Yie (great grandson of Ding Ganren and Professor & Chief Physician of Chinese Medicine at Long-Hua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai University of TCM)
I am happy to share this podcast interview I did with Heavenly Qi; lots of information on pulse diagnosis, trauma, toxicity, Heart health and much more within the Shen-Hammer lineage. Take a listen and let me know what you think….
An interesting article that reveals a sub-segment of western science and research catching up to some conclusions Chinese medicine has made thousands of years ago:
- The terrain/landscape/constitution is of paramount importance and determines the nature of the expression; it is not ‘us vs. them’
- Exposures to environmental and external influences produce a major ecological opportunity and response than can be immensely beneficial

A Critical Thinker’s Guide to Zika
Zika will most certainly be remembered as the pandemic of 2016, but like many pandemics of recent memory (think Swine Flu, Avian Flu, Ebola), it failed to live up to the inflated numbers and devastating statistics that the CDC ceaselessly projected through mainstream and social media. As a narrative, the Zika Crisis of 2016 rivaled Hollywood blockbusters with its global threats and dramatic turns, but as our villain, the Zika threat remained elusive. As the year came to a close it seemed that perhaps a better detective and less of a S.W.A.T. team might help us navigate the medical mysteries that plague us in the 21st Century.
Below is an article recently published in Golden Flower Chinese Herbs’ fall 2016 newsletter.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt
On a recent trip to Costa Rica I discovered that fear has found its way to my “happy place” – or rather it infected it with Zika virus hysteria. This had been coming, I suppose – with the influx of ex-pats come modern conveniences and the comforts of home and I have felt the world creeping in little by little. Alas, the discomforts of home have also arrived… in the form of pandemic fears.
A topic we are uniquely able to treat with Chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbs, etc.
